Monahan Lake Cottage
For this project, I was assigned a floorplan and a client. I was responsible for choosing a design style and selecting furniture. To present the project, we were to make design boards with hand renderings. It was completed for a residential design class in December 2019.
Floorplan for Monahan Lake Cottage
I was given an empty version of this floorplan and was not allowed to move any walls, doors, or windows. One of my responsibilities with the project was to make this furniture plan.
The overall floorplan for the Monahan Lake Cottage. Mark and Jana Monahan want to build a new lake house and furnish it in a style that is cohesive throughout the whole house. They want room to entertain their family in the living, dining, and kitchen areas. The design should be kid-friendly as the Monohans have young grandchildren who will be visiting them. Seeing as the client is older, the home needs to be designed with accessibility in mind.
The living and dining areas have the same color scheme and matching furniture to connect the large open. The medium-toned laminate wood floor adds a bit of the rustic cabin feel. The furniture is a darker wood tone to also add a rustic feel. The fabrics keep in the color scheme being navy blue and off-white to brighten the space. The large windows are made a focal point by having dark wood around them. The round coffee table and side tables are kid friendly with no sharp corners. The resin table in the dining room acts as an interesting accent in the space and adds to the lakeside cabin feel. The bench seating at the table saves space and makes the dining table a focal point between the living room and kitchen.
The master suite continues with the color scheme and contemporary rustic style. The bedroom has the same laminate flooring and light blue wall paint. The neutral beige fabrics help tone down the blue and add warmth to the room.
The master bathroom continues the contemporary rustic style and color scheme from the master bedroom albeit a bit lighter. The floor tiles are dark blue with a wave like pattern inspired by the house's location on a lake. The wall tile is a light tan that pulls from the tones in the pebble accent tile around the shower and bathtub. The vanity and storage cabinet are from the same collection as the furniture in the master bedroom which helps connect the master suite as one area. The hardware is bronze as in the kitchen to connect the whole design..
The kitchen takes a slightly different color scheme consisting of mostly white and beige. The warm white cabinets contrast the dark laminate flooring and have a more contemporary feel. With the island and dining table connected in the middle, there's lots of room on either side for people to maneuver. The door style and bronze hardware incorporate the rustic elements found in the rest of the design. The butler's pantry has the same finishes as the kitchen so it looks and functions as an extension of the space.
